5 Easy Steps & 4 Minutes – You’ve Got This!

Need to do some repair on an old double hung window? No need to be intimidated.

Steve Quillian, founder of the historic wood window repair company, Wood Window Makeover (also known by some as the Window Nerd), shows us how to do it in under 4 minutes!

I don’t know about you, but taking a double hung window out in under four minutes is pretty impressive. This how-to article and video is for the homeowner and the historic window contractor who want to learn some new tricks from an old pro!

We’ve outlined the steps below. Be sure to take 4 minutes and watch the video!

You’ll need these 3 tools:

  • Flat bar (small crowbar will work) with a flattened and sharpened end. Steve uses a file to keep it sharp.
  • Nail puller pliers
  • Duckbill vice grips

How-to Remove Your Old Window:

Step One: Remove the Window Stops

Using your crowbar, begin prying the window stops off from the inside – not the outside. Pry it loose, then work your way up and down until it pops off. Repeat the steps on the other side.

Step Two: Remove the Nails from the Window Stops

Using your nail pullers, remove the nails from the window stop.

Step Three: Cut the Sash Cords and Remove Lower Sash

With the sharpened, flat end of your bar tool, give the sash rope a good jab. This will quickly cut the ropes.

Step Four: Remove the Sash Parting Stops and Cut the Cords

Use your handy bar tool to pry loose the parting stops. Lower the sash and cut the sash cords.
